Arnett Public Schools

The Arnett Junior High Baseball team played their final game of this school year yesterday. They went 19-5 on the year, Fall and Spring seasons combined.

The Baseball District Tournament for the Arnett Wildcats that is being played at Duke has been moved to Friday and Saturday, April 21-22.

There have been a couple of time changes in the Arnett Baseball Tournament schedule for Saturday's games. The Arnett Wildcats will play at 2:00 this afternoon, April 15, instead of at Noon.

Come out and watch some Wildcat Baseball & Softball today! Boys play at noon and girls play at 4:15!

Elementary Principal, Shannon Shoaf was awarded the Outstanding Administrator Award by the Oklahoma Literacy Association on Saturday. Mrs. Shoaf was nominated by Arnett's 5th grade teacher and President of the Northwest Reading Council, Melia Wheeler. Mrs. Wheeler had to write a letter of recommendation, which is posted below. Arnett Schools is privileged to have both educators within our school system. "Mrs. Shoaf is a new principal to Arnett Public Schools but she is a lifelong advocate of literacy. Being our former librarian for grades K-12, Mrs Shoaf makes sure that reading and writing is at the top of everyone's priority list in our school. Mrs. Shoaf promotes engagement in several ways. One way that really stands out is her use of her service dog, Stella. Stella is Mrs. Shoaf’s assistant. Weekly Mrs. Shoaf enters classrooms with her trained service dog (a Golden Retriever) and reads with students. Stella adds an excitement to reading time. Students are allowed to pet and lay on Stella while Mrs. Shoaf reads fun and exciting books. Mrs. Shoaf personally trained Stella, did the research, and went through all the proper channels to make sure she was a good fit for our school. Oftentimes you can find children in the library reading out loud to Stella. This experience has proven to be successful for many of our students who needed a reading companion. Mrs. Shoaf goes above and beyond to make sure the students in her building are falling in love with reading. She encourages her staff to find books that engage students. She is also very hands on in the classroom. For example, this year during a writing assignment my fifth grade class had to read “The True Story of The Three Little Pigs.” They then had to write papers in either defense or prosecution of the wolf. Mrs. Shoaf happily dressed up like the Big Bad Wolf and stood trial in my classroom. When asked to do this she never hesitated, she just told me to tell her when and she went above and beyond. Her makeup for the trial practically looked professional (she recruited the art teacher for this). The amount of support Mrs. Shoaf shows towards her staff is almost indescribable. Being a former classroom teacher as well as a librarian, she knows the importance of strong leadership and what that looks like for our school. This year she encouraged all of her teachers to read “Teach Like a Pirate.” Every week during our staff meetings she held a small “book club” style meeting to discuss what we had learned and read that week. She also created a Google Classroom for her staff so we could discuss that week's topic. Mrs. Shoaf has been a member of our local Northwest Reading Council for over 20 years. She has even served as president numerous times. She is always encouraging others to stay involved and join. She brings new ideas and is always willing to help with our group service projects. Mrs. Shoaf also seeks out professional development for her staff and encourages us to continue to learn. Shannon Shoaf is a prime example of what a teacher, friend, literacy advocate, and administrator should look like. She is the definition of a leader. In today's world where so many teachers are leaving the profession, it is educators/administrators like her that make myself and fellow teachers want to show up to work. She inspires me to be a better teacher. I want to work harder for my students because of her. Mrs. Shoaf deserves to be recognized for her commitment to her students. Mrs. Shoaf deserves to be recognized for commitment to her staff. Mrs. Shoaf deserves to be recognized for her relentless efforts to support literacy. I cannot think of anyone more deserving."
