Summer learning and enrichment continue to keep Arnett students busy, proving that the learning doesn't stop just because school is out of session.
Our summer school students have also been hard at work preparing for the upcoming school year. Second and third grade students have been reading Pocket Bear by Katherine Applegate as they get a jumpstart on the Sequoyah Reading Challenge.

Incoming fifth and sixth-grade students attending summer school have been combining reading and history lessons while studying Danilo Was Here, a title from the Sequoyah Book list. The historical fiction novel follows Danilo, a Panamanian boy who becomes a refugee in his own country during Operation Just Cause, the United States invasion of Panama, before receiving the opportunity to play baseball in the United States.
As students read the novel, they have also learned about Operation Just Cause and the events that took place in Panama. Because the story is set in the 1990s, students have explored aspects of 1990s culture and how life during that decade influenced the characters and setting.
In language arts, students have been strengthening their vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and understanding of story elements through the use of Interactive Notebooks. The hands-on activities have helped students organize information and make connections between the historical events and the novel.
Summer school students have also been reviewing math standards and practicing key skills to prepare for the upcoming school year. The combination of reading, history, and math review has provided students with opportunities to strengthen academic skills while learning about an important period in history.

Recently, Mrs. Broyles and several members of the high school band traveled to the Oklahoma City Civic Center to attend a performance of The Last Five Years. The musical provided students with an opportunity to experience live theatre and gain a deeper appreciation for the performing arts. Experiences like these broaden students' perspectives and expose them to artistic opportunities beyond the classroom.

Looking ahead, Arnett has more exciting opportunities on the horizon. Beta Club sponsors and students will be traveling to Nashville this week to attend the National Beta Club Convention. We wish them safe travels and the very best as they represent Arnett on the national stage.
Even during the summer months, Wildcats continue to read, learn, explore, and grow.
