Zoo Trip

The first nine weeks of school may be coming to an end at Arnett Schools, but students are showing no signs of slowing down!

This week, fifth and sixth graders presented their musical story projects to the entire elementary school. Each group selected a story to read aloud, then brought it to life with sound effects made from instruments and creative noise makers. Students worked for several weeks to plan, practice, and perfect their performances—and their hard work paid off with plenty of laughter and applause from the audience.

Meanwhile, fourth-grade science students took learning outdoors as they created solar-powered airplanes. Using the power of the sun, the students tested how sunlight could propel their miniature aircraft—a fun and hands-on way to explore solar energy.

Members of the Arnett BETA Club stayed active in the community by helping the Kiwanis Club with Kids Day activities. BETA students helped judge and stage the parade, assisted with the races, and even handed out ice cream to participants and guests.

Students in 4th through 6th grade at Arnett Schools recently enjoyed their Fall Field Trip to the Oklahoma City Zoo, where they spent the day exploring, learning, and having fun among some of the world’s most fascinating animals.

The students toured many of the zoo’s exhibits, seeing creatures big and small up close. James Boyd, a sixth grader, said his favorite animal was the anaconda, amazed by its massive size and smooth, scaly skin. “It was really cool to see how big it was!” he shared.

The fifth graders had plenty to talk about, too. Their favorite moments included watching a gorilla slide down a log, which had everyone laughing, and seeing a baby chimpanzee playing with a rock, showing just how curious and playful animals can be.

One of the highlights for everyone was visiting the zoo’s newest addition—a four-month-old baby elephant. Students couldn’t stop talking about how adorable the young elephant was as it stayed close to its mother and explored its habitat.

Teachers and students agreed that the day was not only exciting but also educational. The trip gave everyone a chance to learn about animal behavior, habitats, and conservation while making great memories with their classmates.

The Fall Field Trip to the OKC Zoo was a roaring success, leaving Arnett’s 4th–6th graders with smiles, stories, and a deeper appreciation for wildlife.

Mrs. Dearing’s 4th–6th-grade math students are participating in an exciting new challenge this year — NBA Math Hoops! This innovative program leverages the game of basketball and the NBA/WNBA brands to build fundamental math skills through a fun and interactive experience. Students engage with a basketball-themed board game, digital activities, and a supporting curriculum that brings math to life.

Designed for students in grades 4–8, NBA Math Hoops helps develop algebra readiness while also strengthening skills like self-regulation and executive function.

Students recently completed their player drafts and are eager to begin playing the board game after fall break. Mrs. Dearing is thrilled to teach these important concepts in a fresh, engaging way that connects math with the excitement of basketball!
