The final week of summer school at Arnett Elementary was a resounding success, filled with creativity, fun, and well-earned rewards. Incoming third graders capped off their summer learning by reading the engaging novel Chocolate Fever. After diving into the story, students got the chance to bring their imaginations to life by creating their own characters inspired by the book—a hands-on activity that combined literacy with artistic expression.

Students in grades 3 through 6 spiced up their summer school experience with a hands-on project that combined math, language arts, and creative design. As part of a project-based learning activity, students created their own taco trucks from the ground up. Each student was challenged to design a logo, slogan, build a model truck, and develop a complete menu with prices. Inside their 3D taco trucks, they included geometric shapes and designed floor plans—bringing in real-world applications of geometry and spatial planning. Along the way, students learned marketing skills and used creative problem-solving to bring their ideas to life. The project was a tasty success, blending education and imagination in every crunchy corner. Ellie Royal for instance designed a taco truck named "Big Red's Taco Truck".

Students in grades 3 through 6 at summer school have been diving into The Witching Wind by Natalie Lloyd, one of this year’s Sequoyah Award nominees. Set in the misty Smoky Mountains, the novel weaves legend, mystery, and family traditions into a captivating tale. To celebrate finishing the book, students participated in a unique activity inspired by the story—they sampled “dread pies,” a fictional remedy from the novel. In the book, a character suffering from a bout of the "dreads" is given these small apple pies by her family to help lift her spirits. The real-life taste test brought the story to life and added a sweet ending to their literary journey.
